How to Unlock a Password-Protected Excel Sheet?

 In this article we will show you how to remove Excel password protection when you want to open an excel file but forget the password. you can follow the step below.


Remove Excel Password Protection

1. Change your excel file's extension from *.xlsx or *.xlsm to *.zip. After that, you will get a warning asking you to click Yes.
Note: Before you change your excel file's extension, please make a copy file for back up. in case there is an issue with this file


2.  You click to open the *.zip file after your file Excel has been converted.

3. Select the folder "xl" and then the folder "worksheets". inside the folder "worksheets", you will see a list of XML files for all your Excel worksheets as sheet1.xml, sheet2.xml, sheet3...
4. To edit the xml file, we need to open the xml file in notepad.
5. If you have a lot of xml files in the folder "worksheets", then we need to open them one by one xml file starting from sheet1.xml and pressing Ctrl+F to search for "sheetProtection".  If sheet1.xml does not find "sheetProtection", then we continue to open the next xml file.
6. After searching and finding the "sheetProtection", you select this entire line between "<" and ">" and delelte it, then click save. 
7. After that, you will get a warning asking you to confirm the modification. Click Yes.
8. Well done! Now we rename the file's extension back from *.zip to *.xlsx or *.xlsm.
9. Open the Excel spreadsheet. Then you now have access to view and edit the Excel without the password.
